Celebrating the life of

Mary Alice Cavitt

February 02, 1932 - November 17, 2024

Mary Alice Cavitt

Mary Alice Cavitt was born on February 02, 1932, in Newcomerstown, OH, to Earl Lindsey Titus and Frances Gertrude Hinds. She passed peacefully in her home at The Marshes of Skidaway Island on Sunday, November 17, 2024, age 92. Mary Alice’s small-town life in Newcomerstown was full. She was loved and respected for her many talents, service, and social life – active in the Methodist Church, participating in high school orchestra, theater, musical, singing groups, and playing trombone in the Marching Band.

Mary Alice met her husband, CAPT William Miles Cavitt USN (Dec.), in Jacksonville, FL. They married and she began her busy life as the spouse of a career military officer including raising four children and conducting the admirable sacrifices and duties expected of a senior military officer’s wife. Mary Alice moved to Savannah in 1977 when her husband, Bill, retired from the Navy to work for Gulfstream. They lived a life full of adventure and travels throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. They enjoyed family boating and cruising along the East Coast and in the Bahamas on their 46’ powerboat, “Southwind”. She especially loved spending time on the beaches of the Low Country’s barrier islands and boating in the marshes and Intracoastal Waterway. They were long-time supporters of the Savannah Philharmonic and other performing art organizations. Her love for reading and history inspired her many years as a docent at Savannah’s famous Davenport House. Mary Alice was an active member of the Savannah chapter of the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO). She loved Savannah and lived there for 47 years until her passing.

Mary Alice is survived by her daughter and three sons, Cheryl Denise Hazelwood, CAPT William Miles Cavitt, Jr., USN (Ret) (Christie), David Bruce Cavitt (Ellen), John Robert Cavitt, five grandchildren, David Cavitt (Katie), Anne Schwarz (Jochen), Brie Hazelwood, Blake Hazelwood (Allie), William Miles Cavitt III, eleven great-grandchildren, and her brother Dr. Robert E. Titus (Judy). She is preceded in death by her parents and husband.

The family is grateful for the compassionate care and friendship given by Lavita Cavitt and other caregivers from Coastal Care Partners and for the outstanding medical care from The Oaks at The Marshes of Skidaway Island, and Hospice Savannah.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 2, 2024, at the Skidaway Island Community Church, in Savannah. Memorials can be made, in lieu of flowers, to the Tunnel To Towers Foundation - https://t2t.org/donate/, or Plant a Tree Memorial - https://www.alivingtribute.org/
